Anya speaks truth to power

From Empty Places, season seven

(I personaly hate this episode the characterisation was sacrificed for the plot but I always thought this was a brilliant explanation of privilege)

BUFFY
(looks around) Look, I wish this could be a democracy. I really do. Democracies don’t win battles. (Xander looks away) It’s a hard truth, but there has to be a single voice. You need someone to issue orders and be reckless sometimes and not take your feelings into account. You need someone to lead you.
ANYA
(calmly) And it’s automatically you. (looks at Buffy) You really do think you’re better than we are.
BUFFY
No, I -
ANYA
But we don’t know. We don’t know if you’re actually better. I mean, you came into the world with certain advantages, sure. I mean, that’s the legacy.
BUFFY
I -
ANYA
But you didn’t earn it. You didn’t work for it. You’ve never had anybody come up to you and say you deserve these things more than anyone else. They were just handed to you. So that doesn’t make you better than us. It makes you luckier than us.
BUFFY
I’ve gotten us this far.
XANDER
But not without a price.
BUFFY
Xander -
XANDER
I’m trying to see your point here, Buff… but I guess it must be a little bit to my left… (shakes his head) ’cause I just don’t

I’m going to have to get into Buffy at some point I think, everyone seems to think it’s amazing, plus it’s got vampires which is usually a good thing – unless Tarantino is in it somewhere hamming it up, trying and failing to be creepy.

  3. definitely no Tarantino.

    yeah, agreed on that ep.

i don’t suppose any of y’all are into Dr. Who/Torchwood, per chance?…(esp. Torchwood for those in Cardiff…)

I really enjoy Dr Who (much of which is also filmed in Cardiff)

Torchwood I struggle to get into. I make a good start and watch the first few episodes but then I lose it. I just don’t quite get the Captain Jack thing.

It if quite bizarre watching them trying to make Cardiff look cool though.

  5. heh, yeah, I was gonna say.

“If you ever see a little blue box…”

oh, my best friend just interviewed David Tennant and Freema Agyeman, and didn’t even bring me back any, the bastard…

I have to say I do have a thing for both Jon barowman and Eve Myles, but by and large I prefer Dr who to torchwood

I was at dinner tonight with this woman who lives in Cardiff Bay. She said that one of her friends was looking out the window the other day and said “Oh they’re filming Dr Who.” “How do you know?” She asks. “Er. The blue box.” She actually lives in the same apartment block as John and Freema.

This guy I know stumbled onto the set of Torchwood one night. He’s a sexual health promotion worker and he was out on patrol in the park, walked through a hedge and found himself in front of cameras and lights. I’m told they put a line about it in the show, but I don’t know.

I can kind of see why they’d film sci-fi stuff in Cardiff Bay, it looks like someone dumped the sets from old 50s sci-fi dystopias out there, it just looks like a really creepy theme park. I went for a job interview in Cardiff Bay once and the building was so boat-themed I think I actually got seasick in the waiting room. I bet when they were building it all, Terry Gilliam was giggling manically to himself without knowing why.
